Tips for Troubleshooting Internet Connection Problems

Internet has become as important as the air we breathe today. When we get plagued with a slow Internet connection or other connection problems, we reach the verge of a mental breakdown at times.

1. Signal Interference

Many times it so happens, Internet connection becomes slow when the wireless connections face interference. This interference may include signals from cordless phones or other household appliances. Not just your home, but even the appliances from your neighbor’s home may interfere with your wireless signals. At times, a router tucked way behind books or behind the metallic case of your CPU may also lead to low signal strength leading to poor network connectivity. Thus, reposition your router or change the Wi-Fi channel number and get better connectivity.

2. Background Applications Draining Your Connections

Do you use applications or programs such as Peer to Peer (P2P)? Are you into heavy download or online gaming? These applications may continue to run in the background and sucking the life out of your Internet connection. Thus, making it too slow or irresponsive. 3. Ping Your Connection

If you find your connection is not working properly, then you can try the ping command. Just open the Command Prompt window from the Start Menu. Here, type in a command like ping The command will send different packets to the address you have specified. If all is fine, you will find there will be 0% packet loss and time taken for each packet will be fairly less.
In case of loss of packets, it indicated network problems. This means either there is problem with the website (quite rare), your Internet service provider or a problem with your router.

4. A Virus Takes Over Your Computer

Internet worm is a malicious software program. It can spread through computer networks and run havoc in the lives of those who cannot stay offline even for a minute. If your computer gets affected by an Internet worm, it may start connecting randomly and generating network traffic without your knowledge. This will lead to a slow Internet connection and a worried you. Just run a good antivirus software and remove any malicious worms from your computers.

5. Router Trouble

Do you see lights flashing on your router? Is any light missing or blinking uncontrollably? You need to switch off the power source and unplug your router and then the modem. Now, count 1 to 10. Plug it back the modem and then the router. Allow them to get some peaceful time to boot up and then see the activity lights. Try connection your computer with Internet again.

If all the lights are on and still you cannot connect to the Internet or get a response of the ping, now you need to take some serious action. Just pick the cable provided by your ISP and connect it directly to your device or modem. Can you get online now? If no, then call your ISP immediately for answers.

How to Connect Two Computers Without a Router

You may have multiple computers at your home or workplace. In order to connect different computers to share files, documents or Internet connection, you may need to set up a network.

Instead of going through an elaborate process of getting a router, you can do it the easy way. We will show you an easy method that teaches you how to connect two computers without router.

Connecting Computers Without Using a Router

Sharing files, photos, videos, music as well as Internet between two computers is possible without a router. The best and the simplest way is to buy an Ethernet cable and you are good to go.

In order to use an Ethernet crossover cable, your computers need to be installed with LAN or Ethernet cards. If you are using the latest computers then you need not worry. These machines have network cards installed by default. In case your machine does not have it, then do not worry. Just attach an internal LAN card to the motherboard or get yourself a USB Network adapter.

Getting Computers in the Same Workgroup

Now, before you get two computers connected with the help of an Ethernet crossover cable, you need to make sure the computers are in the same workgroup.

Those using Windows XP need to go to My Computer and select the Properties from the drop-down menu. Go to Computer Name in System Properties. Click on the Change button, enter the unique Workgroup name, and restart the computer.

Windows Vista or 7 users need to go to Control Panel and search for Workgroup. Select any entry that says ‘Change Workgroup Name’ and click on the Change button. Type the name you want for your workgroup, save and restart the computer.

Connecting Workgroup Computers Using Ethernet Crossover Cable

Using an Ethernet crossover cable, you need to connect the two computers. Just plug one end of the cable to the network adapter of one computer and the other end to the adapter of Computer B.

You may have to Turn On Network Discovery and File Sharing on your computer. This will help you look for the second computer on your Network. Make sure you select ‘No, make the network I am connected to a private network’ when prompted.

That’s it. Once the computers are connected, you can start sharing files, photos, media, etc. between the two.

Sharing Internet without a Router

When you wish to share Internet between computers who do not belong to the same workgroup, you can do so with an Ethernet cable. All you need is one computer with an active Internet connection and one Ethernet crossover cable.

Those using Windows XP need to go to ‘Network and Internet Connection’ and click on the Network Connections.

When you right-click on the network connection you need to share, select Properties and go to the Advanced tab. Select the Allow network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection. Click on OK and that’s it. Your computers will now share Internet connection using an Ethernet cable.

Windows Vista and 7 users need to follow a slightly different process. Go to Network Connections in Control Panel and search for View Network Connections. You need to right-click on the network connection you want to share and go to Properties. Now, select Sharing and select ‘Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection.’ Once you hit OK, your computers will start sharing the Internet connection.

As you can see, it is possible to connect two computers without Router. Just invest in a good Ethernet crossover cable and you will be good to go!

How to Reset a Router to Factory Default Settings

It is quite annoying when you try to login to your router admin page and forget your username and password. At times, you need to reset your device to erase the current settings and start afresh. Whatever your reason may be you need to know how to reset a router to factory default settings.

Resetting a Router to Factory Default Settings Using Web-Based

If you can access the webpage of your router, and wish to undo all your settings, you need to follow the steps below:

  • Enter the default IP address of your router in any web browser. You will be asked to enter the default username and password.
  • Once you enter the site, you need to go to the Administration page of the router.
  • Here, look for Factory Default tab and click on Restore Factory Default.
  • Once you click on Restore Factory Default, your router will be reset to its default settings. 

Resetting a Router Device To Factory Default

In case you cannot remember you login password or username, the only option you have is to reset your router device. When you reset the device, you lose all your settings and they are reset to factory default. In order to reset the device, you need to take a thin pin or pen and push the tiny button on the device. It will be located in the back near the Ethernet port or the power plug. Press and hold the button for about 10 seconds.

You will find the Power LED button blink while you press the Reset button. After you release the button, your router will be reset to factory default.

Change Your Router Network Password

It is important to change the Wi-Fi network password after you reset your router to factory default. On the router admin page, go to the Settings page and look for Management section or Security tab. Here, enter a new Wi-Fi password and save the network. Change the name of your Wi-Fi network as well as you don’t want hackers to identify your router and hack into your system.

What is Bluetooth Technology? How Does It Work?

Bluetooth Technology – Overview

Bluetooth is a type of wireless technology that helps in transferring data between different Bluetooth-enabled electronic devices. It does not use any wires or cables to connect phones or computers. Instead, it uses radio waves to transfer data and connect devices.

With the help of a tiny computer chip that contains Bluetooth radio or software, it helps connect phones, computers, headphones, watches, etc. Thus, the term hands-free became a fad among the youngsters who wished to do more wirelessly.

How Does Bluetooth Work?

The Bluetooth RF transceiver operates within the unlicensed ISM band centered at 2.4GHz. Using an RF topology called the ‘star topology’, it manages devices. When devices are synchronized, it leads to the creation of one expert and other servant type connection. The expert device or master will communicate with the slave devices within the Bluetooth system. It will deliver its own exclusive address and the value of its inner time.

When the master device sends data or communicates, the slave devices will receive the information. For example, when you switch on the Bluetooth on your mobile phone and connect it to the Bluetooth speakers. First, your phone will search for devices in your nearby areas and then display your speakers. Choose your speakers to connect the devices. Once the connection is established, you can start playing music on your phone using the speakers.
