How to Set Timer on Wireless Router

With thousands of games to download as well as many social media apps like Instagram and Facebook, it becomes difficult to cut down on the time online. It’s not just the kids who are spending more and more time online. Even we adults are guilty of spending our evenings glued to the social networking sites as well as chat apps. And with a Wi-Fi router within the house, it is easy for all to stay connected online simultaneously.

Although it is a boon to have Wi-Fi around the house, there are many disadvantages to having unlimited Internet connection. The best way to take a break from the Internet is to use some built-in features of your router. Did you know your router has a set timer that can limit the use of your Internet? Access Restrictions Using Router


The router by default allows unlimited Internet access to all devices. However, you can always visit the router admin page and set a timer or restrictions to a few or all devices connected to your router.

The procedure of setting timer on wireless router may differ according to the manufacturer of your router. Let us have a look at the general procedure that will give you a fair idea on how to secure Wi-Fi using a timer.

  • Enter the IP address of your router into your browser. The IP address is usually printed on the router or available in the manual. 


  • Once the admin page opens, you need to enter the default username and password of your router. The default username and password is usually admin and password.
  • Now, after you gain access, you need to look menu tab that says Router Access Restrictions or Parental Controls. In some routers, you will find a tab called Schedule under Security.
  • Then enter time you want to disable the Internet access. For example, on weekdays from 8.00 PM to 8.00AM or every day from 9.00PM to 10 AM. You can read your user manual for more details regarding granting and curbing access on all and a single device.
  • You can even find the MAC address on the device your need to setup restrictions for. Just go to settings of the device and look for the Wi-Fi address or MAC address. 
  • After you add the particular IP address and set up the access restrictions, click on the save button.

After you complete the process, the restriction will be active and your kids will have limited access to the Internet. However, keep in mind, games and certain apps that do not need Internet will continue to function normally. However, Internet access use can be limited with the help of setting a timer on your Wi-Fi router.
