How to Configure a Wireless Network Step By Step

Configuring a wireless network is often the confusing part for many who have bought home a new router. There is nothing very difficult about setting up a home network yourself. You don’t need to call in an expert to help you set up the router.

The following instructions will help you set a wireless network easily.


Step 1

Connect your modem with the router using an DSL or Cable. Keep in mind, the modem needs to be turned off or unplugged before you begin the installation.

Step 2

Connect your router to your computer with another Ethernet cable.

Step 3

Turn on your modem and wait for about 2 minutes. Then, power on your router and wait for the LED lights on the modem to turn green.


Step 4

Open a browser window on your computer or laptop and enter the IP address of your router. The IP address will be printed on the router device itself or will be printed in the manual that accompanies with the device.

Enter the username and password to log into the router’s main settings page.

The default username and passwords are as follows:

Username – ‘admin’ and Password – ‘admin’
Username – ‘blank’ and Password – ‘blank’
Username – ‘blank’ and Password – ‘password’
Username – ‘admin’ and Password – ‘blank’
Username – ‘admin’ and password – ‘password’

Step 6

After log in, you need to go to the Wireless settings tab. Enter a new SSID that is unique, as it will be displayed as your network name. Choose WAP-PSK (TKP) & WPA2-PSK (AES). Enter a unique more than 8-digit WPA-PSK password or passphrase. Choose a strong password that is 8 to 63 characters long and has a combination of upper/lower case alphabets, numbers and special characters.

Step 7

Click on Submit or Apply and save your settings. On your laptop scan for networks and choose your SSID. Enter the passphrase you saved and your laptop will be connected to the Internet wirelessly.

Step 8

Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the router and laptop/computer. Your device will be connected to your router wirelessly.
