An IP address can be either dynamic or static. In case of dynamic IP address, it is active only for a limited period of time. Once the lease expires, the computer will be automatically assigned a new IP address on lease. A user usually configures the static IP address. However, this is a very rare address. Users mostly opt for dynamic IP address assigned by the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

1.Click on Start menu and type Run. A new window will open up and you need to type ‘cmd’. Hit ‘Enter’.

How to Configure the Router Using IP 192.168.1.254




The IP address 192.168.1.254 is the default IP address for many home broadband routers as well as modems. These include Netopia/Cayman Internet gateways, Billion ADSL routers, Westell modems for Bellsouth, etc.

The 192.168.1.254 is a private, IPv4 network. It is the gateway to access your router interface. It is very easy to change and reset the password of your router using 192.168.1.254.




This IP address functions similarly to the 192.168.0.1 IP address. You need to connect your computer to the router before you make any changes in the router interface. If there is no connection, you will not be able to make any changes. Unplug your modem connection and router device should be switched on during the process. You can use an Ethernet cable to establish a connection between the router and the computer.


How to Access the Router Admin Page Using 192.168.1.254


A default IP address is necessary to access a router interface. Thus, never forget the default IP address. If you do, you can check it out on the sticker placed on your router by the manufacturer. Before you access the router admin page, you need to switch off your modem.

Switch on the computer and connect it with the router using an Ethernet cable. Open a web browser on your PC and enter the IP address 192.168.1.254. It will lead you to a router admin page.

The router admin page or router access page is password protected. You need to enter the default username and password to access the router interface.

The default username and password in most cases is admin. In some cases, the password field needs to be left blank. You can find the router default username and password on the sticker stuck to your router by the manufacturer. Click OK and log in to your router.

Once you gain access to the admin page, you need to look for WLAN. It will contain all the Basic menu options for your router.

You will land on the Wireless Configuration page and make sure your WLAN service is set on Enable. Enter a new name for your wireless network in the field that says ESSID.

Keep the Security Mode set at WPA2. Enter a password that is strong and cannot be easily hacked. Choose uppercase and lowercase alphabets, numbers and special characters in combination. Enter the new password next to WPA Shared Key.

Save you wireless network settings by clicking on Save Config and then click Apply.

2. DHCPOFFER

3. DHCPREQUEST


This message indicates that the client has accepted the network configuration in response to the DHCPOFFER message from the server.

4. DHCPACK


The DHCP Server sends this message when it receives the DHCPREQUEST message from the client. It is the end of the process and it just about acknowledgement of the DHCP server to authorize the DHCP client to use the network configuration.

5. DHCPNAK


This is the message the is the opposite of DHCPACK. The DHCP server sends it when it cannot complete the DHCPREQUEST by the client.

6. DHCPDECLINE

 

This is the message of the DHCP client to the server in case it gets an IP address assigned is already in use.

7. DHCPINFORM


This is the message that is sent when IP Address is statically configured on a client. With this message, only other network settings are requested to be filled dynamically by the DHCP servers.

8. DHCPRELEASE


It is a message for termination of the lease of network address provided by the DHCP server sent by the DHCP client.

How does DHCP Work?


  • A computer is connected it sends DHCPDISCOVER message from client to server.
  • The DHCP server receives the DHCPDISCOVER and it replies with DHCPOFFER message.
  • The client will now reply a DHCPREQUEST message to the DHCPOFFER sent by the DHCP server. This means the client wants to accept the configuration sent by the DHCP server.
  • After the server gets the DHCPREQUEST message from the client, it will send a DHCPPACK message to the client that indicates it can now use the IP address assigned to it.

DHCP Lease


It is important to know about the concept of lease by DHCP. When a server assigns an IP address to a client, it is given on lease. Once the lease expires, the same IP address can be assigned to another client. Suppose a PC works for 10 hours a day, it will be assigned an IP address. When the PC is shut down for the day, the IP address will be assigned to another client. Suppose the lease is about to expire, the DHCP client will try to renew the lease after half time. This process is done with the help of the DHCPREQUEST and DHCPACK messages.

Step 5

Click Next and you will be moving to LAN IP address. Click Next again.

Step 6

On the DHCP screen, click on Enable DHCP server and enter the IP address with Starting IP address as 198.168.10.50 and Ending IP address as 192.168.10.250. Click Next.

Step 7

On WAN Configuration click Next. On Security Configuration screen, make sure all boxes are checked. Click Next.

Step 8

Review your configuration on the Wizard Summary Screen and make sure it is accurate. Now click on Finish.

Step 9

Click OK and save the new configuration. On your computer, search for your SSID and click connect. Enter the password saved and you will be connected to the Internet wirelessly. Disconnect the Ethernet cable that connects your PC with your Router.

How to Configure Router Using 192.168.0.1

Most routers have 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 as their default IP address.


The 192.168.0.1 is usually assigned to routers manufactured by D-Link, TP-LINK or Netgear.

Configuring Wireless Network Using 192.168.0.1


To configure your wireless network, you need to plug-in your router to a power supply. Connect the modem of your Internet connection to the router. Now, follow the steps and configure the router using the admin page.


  • Enter the 192.168.0.1 default IP address in your browser address bar.
  • Enter the default username and password when prompted. The default for D-Link routers is admin as the username and password needs to be kept blank. In case of Netgear the default username is admin and the password is password or 1234.

  • Enter the Scheduling for wireless settings as ‘Always’.

  • Now, choose the 802.11 Mode as ‘Only’ or ‘Mixed’ mode if available.
  • Keep the Visibility status  as ‘Visible’. This will allow your network name to be broadcasted and allow other devices to seek permission to connect to your network.
  • In the Security Mode  select WPA-Personal  and enter the Passphrase or Pre-shared key.
  • The pre-shared key has to be at least 8 letters long and contain upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers as well as special characters. The pre-shared key has to be strong and difficult to hack.

There are many other settings that you can add or change in the router configuration page. Make sure you know what you need to do and then carry out the changes.

Keep the SSID name visible, if you wish to broadcast it. Or else, turn it to invisible and no one can find your network in the surroundings.
